Warren Buffett’s ability to profit during the tariff-induced market crash stems from his cautious investment strategy and foresight. In 2024, Buffett sold $134 billion worth of stocks and amassed a record $334 billion cash reserve, primarily in short-term U.S. Treasury bills. This shielded Berkshire Hathaway from the severe market downturn triggered by President Trump’s tariffs.
Buffett also reduced Berkshire’s Apple stake by two-thirds before its 28% plunge and trimmed positions in Bank of America and Citigroup, both heavily impacted by the tariffs. His focus on sectors less vulnerable to global shocks, such as railroads, insurance, and energy, further stabilized Berkshire’s performance.
This strategic approach allowed Buffett to add $11.5 billion to his net worth in 2025, making him the only billionaire among the world’s top ten wealthiest individuals to see an increase during this period.
