According to Eurostat data, in 2023, 54.5% of Bulgarian doctors were over 55 years old, the highest in the EU; in rural areas, the average age of family doctors is over 61.

OECD data also shows that Bulgaria’s average life expectancy in 2024 is 75.8 years, lower than the EU average of 81.5 years, largely due to the scarcity of primary healthcare resources.
