Urban green walls, a common feature in cities, often face the challenge of high maintenance costs.
A London-based startup has developed a soil-free and easier-to-care-for green wall using moss and a specially formulated eco-concrete.
It not only absorbs PM2.5 to purify the air but also acts like a sponge, absorbing water to prevent flooding and regulating indoor temperature.
Normally, moss growing on houses or roads can create a dark, damp, and grimy feeling, something to be removed immediately.
However, Alive Lab, a startup in East London, sees moss as a potential greening solution for the future of cities.
They have developed a special mineral-based eco-concrete that allows moss to easily attach and grow. Installed directly on exterior walls or in interior spaces, it is not only aesthetically pleasing but also possesses powerful environmental purification capabilities.
Alive Labs founder and CEO, Naidu, explained, “Moss is actually quite amazing. It has no roots, no vascular bundles, and all its nutrients come from the atmosphere.
Each moss leaf is only one cell thick, giving it an astonishing microstructure and a huge surface area, allowing it to absorb many pollutants.
It has a very high cation exchange capacity, helping to remove nitrogen oxides, fine particulate matter (PM10), PM2.5, and more from the air.”
Besides purifying the air, moss walls also act like a sponge, absorbing rainwater during heavy rains to prevent flooding, cooling buildings in summer, insulating them in winter, and even reducing noise.
Unlike typical green walls, moss doesn’t require soil, pruning, or watering, resulting in lower maintenance costs and making it a simpler decorative building material for greening projects.
Alive Labs’ chief biologist, Du Qi, pointed out, “Traditional green walls using higher plants suffer from root systems that penetrate concrete or building materials, causing damage.
However, moss simply sits on top, slightly embedded in the surface, without damaging the building structure.
So we’re trying to create a symbiotic relationship, one that’s both part of our city and part of nature—a wonderful encounter between two worlds.”
This new moss green wall boasts low-carbon, fire-resistant, and easy-to-grow characteristics, which industry players believe perfectly meet the needs of the construction industry.
If it can successfully move from the laboratory to large-scale deployment, it’s expected to transform city walls from gray and cold into breathing, growing infrastructure.
