The application of AI technology is becoming increasingly widespread in South Korea. One phenomenon is the rise of automated, unmanned stores.
Consumers have reported that coffee brewed by robotic arms tastes better than that from vending machines and they will return.
There are also AI technology companies that specialize in creating images to recreate the lives of deceased loved ones, providing solace to those still living.
According to statistics, there will be 9,000 such 24/7 unmanned stores in South Korea in 2024.
Another statistic shows that the number of unmanned stores will increase fourfold from 2020 to 2025.
Coffee shop owners say they adopted the unmanned model primarily to save on labor costs.
Now, each shop only needs to send an employee for one hour in the morning to replenish coffee beans and bread and complete cleaning.
While cafes with staff tend to do better business, unmanned stores can increase profit margins to over 40%, higher than the traditional 10% to 15%, which is a key reason for the increasing adoption of automation.
1. Potential Business Opportunities & Ventures
- “One-Hour Operator” Turn-Key Retail Franchises: Since automated cafes only require one hour of daily maintenance for cleaning and replenishment, a high-growth venture could design a turn-key “micro-retail business box.” This startup would supply solo-entrepreneurs with modular, automated robotic pods (for premium coffee, ice cream, or quick snacks) alongside a mobile dashboard to manage inventory, allowing individuals to run highly profitable side-hustles with near-zero labor time.
- Predictive AI Restocking & Fleet Logistics SaaS: Managing a decentralized network of unmanned stores creates unique logistical challenges. An asset-light B2B software startup could build a predictive inventory tracking system. By analyzing live sales data and historical traffic patterns, the software can generate optimized, step-by-step restocking routes and precise ingredient quantities for morning maintenance workers, maximizing efficiency and eliminating waste.
- Ethical AI “Legacy Archive” Platforms: Beyond physical retail, South Korea’s rise in AI companies recreating images of deceased loved ones highlights a deep psychological market for emotional solace. A specialized digital media startup could offer a highly secure, high-trust platform where families can curate, store, and build high-fidelity digital legacy memorials, allowing descendants to interact with ancestral archives in a deeply respectful, private environment.

South Korea’s transformation towards unmanned retail proves that replacing high operating costs with intelligent, systematic automation can almost quadruple profit margins overnight.
True leverage means establishing a business model that operates smoothly even when you’re not physically present.
If you currently had the funds to fully automate the daily operations of a physical business or service in your community, what would you choose? How would you structure its daily operations?
