Technology dominates modern life, but it has also led to increasing alienation in interpersonal relationships.
This invisible crisis of “loneliness” threatens not only an aging and declining population, but even Sweden, a welfare state in Northern Europe, is actively seeking solutions.
A Swedish pharmacy chain has taken the lead in offering a “prescription” for preventing loneliness, providing employees with one hour of paid leave per month and a small amount of funding to encourage them to go out and rebuild emotional connections through physical gatherings.
In fact, as early as last year (2025), the Swedish government launched the “National Strategy to Combat Loneliness” to address the loneliness caused by social alienation in modern society.
This compassionate pharmacy chain has gone a step further, providing participating employees with 15 minutes of paid leave per week or one hour per month, along with 1,000 Swedish kronor to use as they see fit.
Bergman, HR director of the Swedish “Mental Health Pharmacy,” said, “They get about an hour off each month from work, plus a small amount of disposable income to meet people—it could be for coffee, a movie, or any activity they want to participate in. It’s an incentive to start thinking, ‘What can I do?’”
Swedish scholars say that the unemployed, divorced, and marginalized groups like immigrants or minorities are more prone to loneliness than the general population, as are the poor, and these are potential factors contributing to social risks.
As for loneliness among teenagers, it may stem from technology, especially social media. However, scholars specializing in European social phenomena say that giving them an hour off per month is insufficient to have a significant impact.
Swade, associate professor of sociology at Lund University in Sweden, pointed out, “I think ideally, we should reduce working hours to six hours, or even perhaps four days a week.”
According to a 2022 Swedish survey of the entire EU population on loneliness, 14% of Swedes felt lonely for most of the past four weeks, slightly higher than the EU average of 13%. A survey by the Swedish Public Health Agency also found that among a population of over 10 million, approximately 600,000 adults frequently feel lonely, and another 1.3 million lack someone to confide in.
Lindberg, an employee of the Swedish pharmacy, stated, “I understand that I’m not bothering anyone; they want to see me. I just have to step out of my comfort zone and not feel embarrassed because, yes, they like me, even if I don’t think so myself.”
This initiative also demonstrates that this large Stockholm pharmacy chain not only sells medicine but also provides its employees with emotional support to combat loneliness.
Potential Business Opportunities & Ventures
The Corporate Wellness Play: “Tribal-Time” Corporate Benefit SaaS
- The Opportunity: Forward-thinking enterprises are recognizing that lonely employees experience severe burnout, leading to decreased global competitiveness.
- The Venture: A B2B HR management SaaS that productizes the Swedish pharmacy’s framework for multi-national corporations. The platform manages automated paid “social leave” blocks, tracks localized team micro-budgets (similar to the 1,000 SEK stipend), and provides employees with a vetted dashboard of non-digital, local group activities (craft workshops, recreational leagues). It delivers tangible results by outputting real-time employee retention analytics for HR directors.
The High-Trust Community Play: “Offline-First” Curated Third Spaces
- The Opportunity: Unemployed, marginalized, and tech-fatigued demographics are highly prone to isolation, but standard social apps only increase their screen dependency.
- The Venture: A franchisable micro-retail incubator that builds hybrid “Third Spaces”—part community workspace, part quiet tech-free sanctuary. These spaces operate via a strict “Gated Community” subscription model where phones are checked at the door, and structural, step-by-step human mingling exercises (facilitated by psychology professionals) are built into the daily environment to force users out of their comfort zones.
The Data-Driven Logistics Play: “Confidant Match” Professional Peer Networks
- The Opportunity: Millions of ambitious, solo-operating professionals and micro-creators report having zero close professional allies to confide in, hindering their startup execution.
- The Venture: An exclusive professional matchmaking service that uses deep personality-architecture auditing to pair solitary founders into long-term, high-trust peer-accountability dyads. By rejecting superficial open forums and focusing entirely on high-integrity 1-on-1 matches, this network acts as an “X-ray scan” for a founder’s psychological health and focus.

“When a massive European pharmacy chain starts prescribing paid leave and cash stipends just to get people to have coffee face-to-face, it’s clear that technology has broken our baseline human connection. True innovation lies in designing systems that pull us back into the real world.
If your current workplace or startup framework were to introduce a mandatory, weekly ‘offline hour’ to combat isolation, what specific non-screen activity would you want your network to engage in? Share your structural ideas below—I read and personally reply to every single comment!“
