Reviving Afghanistan: The Role of Microforests in Ecosystem Restoration

After decades of war, Afghanistan suffered massive deforestation, losing approximately half of its forest cover at one point, and severely damaging natural vegetation such as pistachio orchards.

In recent years, the government, international organizations, and local communities have collaborated to promote afforestation, introducing the microforest concept from Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki.

This involves high-density mixed planting of various tree species to restore the ecosystem. Currently, 500 microforests have been created in seven provinces, helping to reduce soil erosion caused by floods, improve soil fertility, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen resilience to climate change.
