Public transportation typically involves moving from one point of origin to one’s destination, often requiring transfers.
However, the small town of Baden in northern Switzerland has launched an experimental free bus service with no fixed routes or timetables, allowing passengers to hop on and off at will.
The artist who conceived the idea stated that this three-week experiment aims to encourage people to let go of existing conventions and routines, and to actively interact with strangers.
1. Potential Business Opportunities & Ventures
- Curated “Serendipity” Experiences (The “Anti-Algorithm” Startup): Modern life is highly curated by AI. An opportunity exists for a startup that uses AI to engineer serendipityācurating random, local meetups or unexpected activities specifically designed to make participants “feel more alive” by breaking their routines and interacting with strangers.
- “Digital Detox” Corporate Retreats and Coaching: Corporations are desperate for ways to improve employee mental health and creativity, both of which are stifled by social anxiety (“I-people”) and repetitive digital workflows. A coaching service could adapt the “Zero Bus” philosophy, using “relinquishing attachment to control” exercises to improve team trust and sensory awareness.
- Non-Point-A-to-B Transportation as a Benefit: The Swiss project is artistically motivated, but what if a municipality or large tech campus offered a “Relaxation Circular Bus”? The goal isn’t to get somewhere; the goal is to provide a stress-free environment for social mixing and shared escapism, potentially as a subsidized health benefit.
- “Third Space” Social Architecture Consulting: The brothersā previous “Zero-Star Hotel” shows a deep understanding of “non-spaces.” An architectural/design startup could consult on creating physical business environments (coffeeshops, shared offices) that intentionally facilitate unexpected interaction through flexible design rather than efficient flow.

“The Swiss twins are teaching us that in a world obsessively optimized for efficiency, the most radical and life-affirming act is often to simply ‘let go’ and allow something unscripted to happen.
If you were on the Bus Zero today, what is the first thought or the most comforting question you would want a total stranger to ask you?
