The Italian desserts of the future won’t just be kneaded dough in the kitchen; they can be printed in laboratories.

Facing climate change and declining arable land, Italian scientists are ingeniously using a thick liquid made from plant cells and fruit processing residues as ink for 3D printing, creating high-tech food for tomorrow.

This technology could even produce capsule food for astronauts.

Impact Food, a restaurant in Rome, sells Italian cuisine, but some of its dishes use a rather special ingredient: 3D-printed plant-based meat grown in a laboratory.

Impact Food founder Teren explains, “We often give customers the example: Have you ever eaten giraffe meat?

No, that’s the key. Of course, it’s not real giraffe meat, but it’s a challenge, encouraging you to explore what meat tastes like before—that is, to find a completely new flavor that is still essentially meat.”

This soil-free production system can also be used in resource-scarce environments.

The laboratory is currently exploring the cultivation of seedlings and genetically edited nano-tomatoes in a space environment.

These foods will eventually become provisions for astronauts on long-distance missions to the Moon and Mars.

While printed food may seem far removed from the culinary delights we are familiar with, this revolution on the dining table is already underway.

It’s not just a technological breakthrough, but also a new kind of food experiment about sustainability and creativity.

The rise of 3D-printed and lab-grown food creates several exciting entrepreneurial frontiers:

  • Upcycled Flavor Inks: A company focused on sourcing “waste” from juice factories and orchards to create high-quality, nutrient-dense 3D-printing filaments for home and industrial use.

  • Space Catering Logistics: A venture specialized in designing and managing “closed-loop” food production systems for private space stations and future lunar colonies.
  • Culinary Design Software: A platform for “Food Architects” to design and trade digital recipes and 3D food structures, similar to how digital assets are traded in other industries.
