The World Bank report pointed out that more than 2 billion people around the world do not have enough safe drinking water, with the worst water shortage in the Middle East and North Africa. In Abu Dhabi, located in the Arabian Peninsula, a water purification technology company has improved the technology originally used in dehumidifiers, and combined with the water purification process, it has developed the use of humidity in the air to produce drinking water.

This water purification technology company is called Mahava. According to the local language, “Ma” refers to air, and “Hawa” refers to water, which is quite consistent with the process of grabbing water from the air.

Mahawa ranks second in the world in the severity of water shortage, second only to Kuwait. Four of the top five countries are on the Arab Peninsula, and the other is Libya in North Africa. Therefore, seeking solutions to insufficient drinking water has become the top priority for the government and private enterprises.

“We have to solve the problem of providing enough water, so we want to find the world’s largest source of water, which is air,” said Rutman, CEO of Mahava Water Purification.

The technology used by Mahava is common in the dehumidifiers, air conditioning equipment and water purifiers we use every day. According to the operator’s instructions, the first step is to suck the air into the machine and filter it initially, and then collect the water in the air through the heat exchange function. Then filter out the impurities and harmful substances in the water to become purified water for people to drink.

The global water crisis is escalating, with more than 2 billion people lacking access to safe drinking water, especially in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), where countries like Kuwait, Libya, and those on the Arabian Peninsula face some of the most severe shortages. The region’s water scarcity is exacerbated by climate change, population growth, and unsustainable water management, with projections indicating water demand will outstrip supply by 50% by 2030. By mid-century, GDP losses in Arab states due to water scarcity could reach 14%, fueling social instability and migration. Governments and private sectors are urgently seeking sustainable, scalable solutions to address this challenge, pivoting towards innovative water technologies powered by renewable energy as part of integrated water-energy strategies to achieve resilience by 2050.

One of the most promising innovations comes from Mahava, a company in Abu Dhabi that pioneers air-to-water technology using enhanced dehumidifier principles combined with advanced filtration. This technology extracts humidity from the air, condenses it, and purifies it to produce clean drinking water without relying on traditional water sources or extensive infrastructure. Mahava’s patented heat exchange system makes water production energy-efficient and scalable enough to serve everything from private homes to entire communities, offering a decentralized solution to water scarcity. Their vision is to impact millions more lives by expanding globally over the coming decade, providing a sustainable drinking water source directly from air.

Looking ahead to the period between 2025 and 2040, multiple unique and intriguing predictions emerge surrounding water scarcity solutions and related startup innovations. First, atmospheric water generation (AWG) technologies like those from Mahava and other startups such as Kumulus Water (which recently raised substantial seed funding) will become mainstream in arid and semi-arid regions, especially in MENA and parts of Africa. These systems will be enhanced with smart IoT capabilities for remote monitoring and automation, solar-powered operation to reduce carbon footprints, and modular designs for rapid deployment in off-grid and disaster-prone areas. By 2030, AWG devices could become a critical mainstream alternative or complementary source to desalination and groundwater, contributing to urban water supply and rural resilience.

Beyond air-to-water technology, innovations in nanofiltration and membrane science will revolutionize water purification by 2030. Startups will increasingly deploy graphene oxide and nano-structured membranes capable of removing microplastics, heavy metals, pathogens, and pharmaceutical contaminants with extreme energy efficiency. This will reduce the energy consumption and waste of traditional treatments, making clean water accessible in resource-scarce environments. Integration with renewable-powered systems will further enhance sustainability. These breakthroughs will open new markets in both household and industrial water treatment, reshaping supply chains and water quality standards worldwide.

From a strategic startup perspective, novel ways to leverage natural resources beyond traditional water sources will inspire entrepreneurs. For instance, startups will explore “water harvesting from air” on a large scale for residential buildings, commercial complexes, and even agriculture (e.g., hydroponics with independent water cycles). Business models will focus on providing decentralized water production as a service, minimizing the need for water transportation and costly infrastructure. Partnerships between governments, NGOs, and private ventures will be crucial, combining technology deployment with education, financing, and climate adaptation policies. Startups will emerge as key “aquapreneurs,” driving ecosystems that blend circular economy principles with water-energy nexus innovations.

By the late 2030s and into the 2040s, the widespread adoption of AWG and nano-enabled purification will likely transform water security dynamics globally, especially in regions now hardest hit. Climate models predict intensified drought risks in the Middle East, making such technologies not only solutions but necessities for survival. Startups and governments may also integrate AI and machine learning for real-time water management, demand forecasting, and predictive maintenance of water systems. Socially inclusive models ensuring affordability and accessibility in remote or impoverished areas will define success. The cumulative effect will be a more resilient global water infrastructure that balances technology, ecology, and human needs.

Overall, the future of water innovation is marked by a fusion of existing technologies reinvented with cutting-edge science and smart automation, driven by startups with bold visions like Mahava tapping into the vast atmospheric resource. Innovations inspired by local climatic conditions and social contexts will usher in new business strategies centered on sustainability, resilience, and scalability between 2025 and 2045.
