Meet Copenhagen’s Bicycle Chef
“The Bicycle Chef” – Copenhagen Gastro-tours
In Copenhagen, Danish chef Morten Kryger Wulff is renowned for his unique dining concept called Cykelkokken, or “The Bicycle Chef”. He prepares gourmet dishes atop a specially designed cargo bike that doubles as a mobile kitchen, leading diners on culinary bike tours through the city and surrounding nature.
Here’s how the experience unfolds:
- The Journey: Tours typically last about four hours and cover 3–5km. The route winds through Copenhagen’s vibrant neighborhoods, scenic harbors, and sometimes into nearby green spaces like Amager Nature Park.
- Cooking & Eating: Morten stops at select outdoor locations. He unfolds his mobile kitchen—a cargo bike equipped with a gas burner, fridge, work surface, and pantry—and prepares fresh dishes on the spot.
- Menu: The menu changes with the scenery and seasons. Guests may enjoy specialties like grilled seaweed, dill cream, Nordic “pizza,” bean fricassee, or blackcurrant ice cream—often made with locally sourced, sustainable ingredients.
- Experience: Each stop is paired with a dish and lively conversation. Diners eat outdoors, engaging with each other and the chef, while soaking in the changing urban and natural views. The route itself is “part of the menu”—for example, fish or seaweed dishes might be served by Copenhagen’s channels or docks.
- Low-carbon and Slow: The entire experience is pedal-powered and emphasizes sustainability. Morten’s tours are designed to support local producers, foster community, and minimize environmental impact by forgoing restaurant walls for the open air.
This makes the meal not only an adventure for the taste buds but also a celebration of Copenhagen’s cycling culture and green aspirations, connecting food, people, and place in an innovative way.
