North Korea is beginning to reopen to foreign tourists, specifically through organized tours to the city of Rason, which is located on the border with China. This marks a significant development as it comes five years after the country sealed its borders due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beijing-based travel agency Koryo Tours has announced that it will offer tours from February through April 2025, coinciding with the birthday of the late leader Kim Jong Il on February 16. These tours will include visits to various must-see sites in Rason, providing tourists with a unique glimpse into this lesser-visited region of North Korea.
Additionally, other travel agencies, such as Young Pioneer Tours, are also organizing similar trips, indicating a broader trend of resuming tourism in North Korea. The tours are expected to attract travelers interested in experiencing North Korean culture and history, especially during this commemorative period.
Overall, the reopening of Rason to foreign tourists represents a cautious step towards revitalizing North Korea’s tourism sector, which has been dormant for several years due to health concerns and international restrictions.
