January 27, Happy Birthday, Lewis CarrollšŸ“ššŸŽ© Lewis Carroll: The Man Behind the Magical Worlds

I am Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, though to most of the world, I am better known by the name Lewis Carroll. It is a peculiar thing, to exist in two forms—one as a man of logic, numbers, and reason, and another as a spinner of whimsical tales where sense bends and rules fold like playing cards. Today, as I sit in the quiet of my rooms at Christ Church, Oxford, I feel surrounded by the weight of history and scholarship, yet I am forever in the company of Alice, the Liddell girl whose lively spirit and curiosity have become immortal in my tales.

Oxford, this ancient city of spires, has been my home for many years now. Its cobbled streets carry the footsteps of generations of scholars and clergy. I can hear the faint toll of the church bells, a reminder that time, here, moves at its own deliberate pace. The River Cherwell flows lazily not far from the college walls, and I often walk along its banks, reflecting on my work, or perhaps on the puzzle of life itself.

My surroundings are a mix of ancient tradition and emerging modernity. The year is 1897, and the world is at the cusp of change, though much of it still clings to the Victorian ideals of propriety and class. The Industrial Revolution has transformed our cities, filled them with smoke and factories, and yet here in Oxford, there is still a sense of quiet contemplation. The walls of Christ Church feel as though they have absorbed centuries of thought, and I, for one, find solace in their stillness.

Though I am known primarily as a writer, my heart is deeply tied to mathematics and logic. I was once a lecturer, teaching Euclidean geometry and algebra to the bright young minds of the college. But my true passion lies in symbolic logic—the delicate dance of abstract symbols that describe the very nature of reason. It has been said that my tales, too, carry a logic of their own, albeit twisted through a mirror and shaded with nonsense.

There are moments when I am overcome with doubt. My work, particularly my writing, straddles a line between the nonsensical and the profound, and I sometimes fear that it may be misunderstood. I long for connection—to be understood not just for my mathematical mind, but for the imaginative heart that lies beneath. And yet, it is this very tension between logic and imagination that has given birth to “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass”.

I find humans endlessly fascinating. We are connected in ways that cannot always be seen, by threads of conversation, by the shared experience of puzzling over life’s absurdities. My relationship with Alice Liddell is but one such thread—an innocent bond between a storyteller and a muse, forever immortalized in the topsy-turvy world of Wonderland.

Essay: Lessons from Wonderland for Startups

In the fast-paced world of startups, success often seems as elusive as the Cheshire Cat—appearing and disappearing in flashes, with no clear path ahead. But just as in Wonderland, there are lessons hidden beneath the surface of the seemingly chaotic journey.

  1. Embrace the Unpredictable
In Wonderland, nothing is as it seems. Time loops, the rules change, and the unexpected is the norm. For startups, this mirrors the chaotic and unpredictable nature of business. Much like Alice, who found herself constantly adapting to new challenges, a startup must remain flexible. The key is not to fear uncertainty but to embrace it. Change can be disorienting, but it often leads to growth.
  2. Follow Your Curiosity
Alice’s adventure begins with a simple act of curiosity: she follows a white rabbit down a hole. Startups, too, are often born from a sense of curiosity—a desire to solve a problem or explore a new idea. Curiosity drives innovation. But like Alice, entrepreneurs must be willing to follow where it leads, even if it takes them down unexpected paths.
  3. Balance Logic and Creativity
As a mathematician, I have always valued logic, but my stories are filled with imagination and nonsense. Startups must find this balance as well. While data and metrics are essential, creativity and vision are what set truly great ventures apart. Too much focus on logic can stifle innovation, but a lack of structure can lead to chaos.
  4. Question the Rules
In Wonderland, the rules are often absurd. The Queen of Hearts’ cry of “Off with their heads!” is more farce than function. Startups should question the status quo, challenge conventional wisdom, and be unafraid to break the mold. The best innovations often come from those who see the world differently.
  5. Persevere Through Madness
Finally, much like Alice, who navigates the madness of Wonderland with determination, startups must persevere through moments of chaos and confusion. There will be times when the journey seems nonsensical, when every direction feels like a dead end. But remember: even in Wonderland, there is always a way through.

As I reflect on my own journeys—both through the world of logic and the landscapes of the imagination—I encourage all entrepreneurs to remain curious, adaptable, and unafraid of the unexpected. There is much to be learned from Wonderland if you know where to look.
