Silk Road was an online black market and the first modern darknet market, launched in 2011 by Ross Ulbricht under the pseudonym ‘Dread Pirate Roberts.’ It operated on the dark web, facilitating the anonymous sale of illegal goods, primarily drugs, using Bitcoin as the currency.
The platform was known for its libertarian principles, emphasizing individual freedom and privacy.
Ulbricht was eventually apprehended and sentenced to life in prison, marking a significant moment in the history of online illicit trade.
