In the heart of Rome’s Piazza Colonna stands the Column of Marco Aurelio, a nearly 2,000-year-old monument commemorating the last of the Five Good Emperors of Rome.
Starting in March 2025, the Italian government employed laser cleaning technology for a six-month-long cleanup, meticulously removing layers of grime and revealing the ancient battle scenes depicted in the column’s reliefs.
This approximately 47-meter-high commemorative column was built between 180 and 193 AD.
The reliefs on its surface spiral upwards, gradually increasing in size, enough to overlook the square and the Prime Minister’s Palace below.
It comprehensively records the Roman Emperor Marco Aurelio’s campaigns against barbarian tribes along the Danube River, making it a crucial historical record of ancient Roman military and artistic history.
Marta Baumgartner, director of the Italian column restoration project, responded, “What’s important is that it demonstrates respect for the marble, respect for the material itself and the traces of history.
This is evidence of the stone’s natural aging, which must be preserved.
The laser also respects the oxalate layer, preserving not only the material but also the traces of natural aging.”
2. Entrepreneurial Ventures & Business Opportunities
The intersection of laser technology and heritage preservation inspires several compelling business ventures:
- Precision Laser Cleaning Services: A specialized B2B startup providing eco-friendly, non-abrasive cleaning for private historical estates and high-end marble architecture.
- AR Heritage Apps: Developing an Augmented Reality platform that allows tourists to point their phones at restored monuments to see 3D-colorized versions of the original carvings.
- Conservation Tech Consulting: A firm that trains international restoration teams on “Respect-First” methodologies, focusing on the preservation of natural aging layers (oxalates).
- Digital twin Archive: A subscription-based platform offering high-resolution 3D scans of restored artifacts for researchers, game developers, and film production designers.
- Sustainable Stone Care Products: A consumer line of PH-balanced, heritage-safe cleaning agents for luxury stone surfaces in modern homes, inspired by museum restoration standards.
